It's a big day for “Hunger Games” fans -- or as Effie Trinket would say, “a big, big, big day” -- as Lionsgate unveiled the first look at the character in “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.”
The photo is the first in a promotional series known as The Capitol Portraits, revealing new looks at the hotly-anticipated follow-up to last year's smash hit “The Hunger Games,” based on the Suzanne Collins series.
In the portrait, Effie -- who acts as the District 12 escort and in “Catching Fire” accompanies winners Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark on their victory tour -- appears perched on a blue velvet armchair, swathed in a sea of magenta ruffles. While her prim posture and focused gaze recall the obedient Effie fans first saw in the previous “Hunger Games” installment, the character's less-polished look in this photo suggests a new sartorial direction for the Capitol liaison.
Her short, poofy skirt, hot pink gloves, and funky accessories evoke a “Like a Virgin”-era Madonna, while her voluminous curly updo -- complete with Gwen Stefani-esque pink highlights -- make her look like a punky version of Marie Antoinette.
Played by Elizabeth Banks in the series, Effie has never been one to shy away from quirky fashion, much like the rest of the appearance-obsessed Capitol residents. In “The Hunger Games,” Effie sported purple and green hairdos, and a giant-sleeved teal blouse with matching teal eyeshadow, among other memorable looks. If this photo is any indication, the fashion odds will continue to be in her favor.
“Catching Fire” is due out Nov. 22.
