"The Tree of Life"
Nominated For: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography
What's It About: Considering one of the film's stars had no clue what was going on, this may be tough. "The Tree of Life" is about the universe, dinosaurs, angry dads, existentialism; in a word, everything. In simpler terms, Brad Pitt stars as Mr. O'Brien, a strict father raising a family in Texas in the 1950s. The movie follows the family through struggles, triumphs, life and death.
Why You Should See It: Everyone seems to have a different opinion on this one. Some call it awful; others, brilliant. If you've seen any of Terrence Malick's previous films ("Badlands," "Days of Heaven, "The Thin Red Line," "New World"), are a big Brad Pitt fan, and/or enjoy unbelievably gorgeous cinematography, you definitely fit into the latter category. Also, you probably should watch "The Tree of Life" if you're interested in 2011's breakout actress, Jessica Chastain, who stars opposite Pitt.
It's Kind Of Like: A combination of "Melancholia" and Norman Rockwell paintings.
How You Can See It: "Tree of Life" is available on DVD and Blu-ray. It is also still playing in some theaters now
