While most general audiences didn't really take to the whole “Grindhouse” conceit concocted by Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino in 2007, it hasn't left Rodriguez any less enthused.
In 2010, Rodriguez turned one of the faux trailers that accompanied “Grindhouse,” “Machete,” into blood-splattered feature-length life. While the film was a modest success (Rodriguez's movies never cost much money), he is back with a sequel, the aptly titled “Machete Kills.” And by the looks of the trailer, it's going to be a whole bunch of drive-in fun.
You don't get a lot of plot from the clip, but you still see the basics: Machete (craggy-faced treasure Danny Trejo) is shot down from a noose and handed a telephone. “This is Machete,” he growls into the receiver.
Then there's a whole bunch of action-packed nonsense, wonderfully narrated in the same style as the “Grindhouse” trailer: “Trained to kill… Left for dead… Back for more.” Then (of course) a roll call of its ridiculous cast, which includes Michelle Rodriguez (back from the original), Antonio Banderas (!), Lady Gaga (double !), Sofia Vergara, Amber Heard, Charlie Sheen, and Mel Gibson, as a billionaire arms dealer looking to cause mass chaos via some deadly rocket. It should be noted, the Gibson subplot is supposed to lead into the THIRD movie, “Machete Kills… Again,” and no this is not a joke either.
The film will be released on September 13th, a little less than a month before Rodriguez's other hotly anticipated sequel, the sadly Gaga-free “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For,” opens theatrically on October 4th.
