James McAvoy in 'X-Men: Days of Future Past': A Groovy Photo of '70s-Era Professor X

Bryan Singer, who directed the first two "X-Men" movies and is set to return to the franchise with "X-Men: Days of Future Past," is an unstoppable tweeting machine. He's already unleashed photos of Kitty Pryde and revealed new cast members though their directors' chairs. Now he gives us a first look at Professor X, played once more by James McAvoy -- and this time, he's looking pretty groovy. The main storyline in "X-Men: Days of Future Past" takes place in the 1970s, shortly after the events of "X-Men: First Class," and Singer has chosen to caption the photo with one word: "Serpico." Serpico, of course, was the famous undercover cop- made-immortal cinematic icon by Al Pacino in Sidney Lumet's 1973 movie. And, it's true, the photo of McAvoy's Professor X does look disgustingly '70s -- long, stringy hair, horrible polyester shirt, general look of post-disco malaise. It is, in short, amazing. Of course, since this movie involves two parallel timelines and time travel and a whole bunch of other stuff that seems potentially mind-melting, the other Professor X, Patrick Stewart, will also be in the movie, alongside stars from both sides of the franchise, including Ian McKellen, Michael Fassbender, Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, and Halle Berry. In short: it's going to be more nuts than McAvoy's wig. The movie hits theaters July 18, 2014.
