When Disney acquired Marvel in 2009, the imaginations of fanboys everywhere immediately started firing -- could you imagine a Disney animated feature based on the characters? Well, that dream will finally come true next year: Disney has just announced that “Big Hero 6,” the first Disney Feature Animation project based on a Marvel property, will be out in November of 2014. Don Hall, who directed the criminally underrated “Winnie the Pooh,” will be helming the computer-generated feature.
In an exclusive report in the Los Angeles Times, Hall said, “Marvel properties take place in the real world. We were looking for something to do where we could make our own world -- bring in the Japanese influences, have recognizable landmarks mashed up with a Japanese aesthetic.”
Now the big question: what in the name of Thor's hammer is “Big Hero 6?” Steven T. Seagle and Duncan Rouleau created the team in 1998 as a spin-off of the then-popular comic “Alpha Flight.” The team is a state-sanctioned group of superheroes, who battle all manner of weirdness in Japan (the animated feature has moved the location to a hybridized Japan/San Francisco mash-up). Quesada described it to the paper as such: “"It takes tropes of Japanese culture, manga, anime. There are giant dinosaurs that invade a city, big robots, youth fashion, cutesy stuff in the vein of Hello Kitty." Sounds good to us!
Further particulars about the feature, including who is writing it and voicing the cast, have yet to be released. It should be somewhat tricky finalizing the team's line-up, however, since one of the members of the team, The Silver Samurai, can be seen in this summer's “The Wolverine,” a Fox property that has no crossover with the Disney-owned Marvel projects. Expect the first teaser trailer to be attached to Disney Animation's “Frozen,” coming this fall.
