There's no such thing as impossible for international superstar Tom Cruise.
It's been two years since we saw Cruise performing his own hair-raising stunts in "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol," but it seems like just yesterday. Luckily, fans of agent Ethan Hunt won't have to wait much longer to catch up with his latest globe-trotting adventures. Cruise is in the middle of making a deal with Paramount to take on his fifth "Mission: Impossible," although the roles of writer and director are still up in the air.
When "Ghost Protocol" came out, folks were wondering if co-star Jeremy Renner would take the reins from Cruise. It will be interesting to see if Renner will return for his role as fellow IMF agent William Brandt. The "Avengers" actor has had a few missteps in the past few years with "The Bourne Legacy" and the long-stalled "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" fantasy/action flick.
The other big question is: Who will write and/or direct?
Pixar mastermind Brad Bird directed what fans dubbed "Ghotocol," but he hasn't indicated much interest in joining the next "Mission." Deadline reports that the rumor mill is indicating Christopher McQuarrie could be tapped for the directing gig. McQuarrie adapted and directed Cruise in last December's "Jack Reacher," and while it didn't do gangbusters in the States, it more than made up for it in foreign markets. Seeing as how "Mission: Impossible" is a franchise that appeals to audiences around the world, as does Tom Cruise, it's not unthinkable that McQuarrie could be hired. However, as Vulture points out, it was announced yesterday that McQuarrie has been picked to write and direct the remake of "Ice Station Zebra" for Warner Bros.
The leader of this "Mission" is anyone's guess.
