With "Pain and Gain," opening this weekend, director Michael Bay has another notch in his bombast belt -- a based-on-a-true-story tale of some bodybuilders who diversify their criminal portfolio by getting into kidnapping, robbery, and murder. It ostensibly stars Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson, and Anthony Mackie as the dim-witted criminals, but as with any Michael Bay movie, the real star is Bay's hyperactive camerawork, pumped up colors, and bursts of explosively violent action.
But there are some moments in Michael Bay's movies that are unexpectedly quiet and almost (dare I say it?) human. Every so often, Bay stops and smells the roses ... before blowing the same roses to smithereens in an apocalyptic, pyrotechnic orgy of fiery destruction. But no matter. Bay is a humanist at heart, even if he seems hopelessly obsessed with phony, oiled-up machines like robots and sports cars and supermodels.
