This weekend's releases can be summed up in one word: "Oblivion."
While the Tom Cruise sci-fi actioner isn't the only movie in theaters this weekend -- this Friday also marks the wide release of the Ryan Gosling-Bradley Cooper film "The Place Beyond the Pines" -- it is the only new movie hitting theaters in wide release. The sci-fi flick had a strong opening overseas, raking in $61.1 million last weekend, and considering it is up against an indie that is already out in limited release, it's likely to come out on top. Big time.
"Oblivion" is set on a future Earth that has been all-but destroyed after a fierce battle waged against an alien race. Cruise plays a lowly drone repairman whose only job is to stand guard over the war-ravaged planet, that is, until he learns a dangerous secret and becomes the only person who can save it. The movie also stars Morgan Freeman and Olga Kurylenko.
As previously mentioned, "The Place Beyond the Pines" is expanding its box office reach, hitting theaters in wide release this weekend and hoping to add to the $5.6 million it's already tallied in limited release.
In the film, Gosling plays high-wire motorcycle driver Luke, who travels the country with the circus. When he reunites with an old flame (Eva Mendes) in New York, he learns she gave birth to their son while he was off performing dare-devilish stunts. Desperate to provide for his new family, Luke goes on a spree of bank robberies, and is rolling in the dough until one heist goes array. Enter Bradley Cooper as rookie cop, Avery, who ends up in hot pursuit of the criminal. The movie follows the the pair over the next 15 years to reveal what toll their actions have taken on the next generation.
"Oblivion" and "The Place Beyond the Pines" open in wide release Friday, April 19.
