By now, most of you are familiar with President Obama's "Star Wars"/"Star Trek" flub in a White House briefing room Q&A period.
"So ultimately, if (Senate Minority leader) Mitch McConnell or (House Speaker) John Boehner say, `We need to go to catch a plane,' I can't have Secret Service block the doorway. Right?" said Obama.
Even if he did bar his office – the oval one – Obama said he wouldn't do a "Jedi mind-meld" with Congress' top two Republicans to persuade them "to do what's right."
"Star Wars" and "Star Trek" fans were miffed at the incorrect usage of the term -- "Star Wars" Jedis use "Jedi mind tricks" to manipulate people, whereas Vulcans on "Star Trek" can use a mind-meld to connect their thoughts and feelings to one another.
"Lord of the Rings" star Sean Astin (who played the lovable Samwise Gamgee in the trilogy) is also miffed, albeit in a joking way. In a phone interview for Toronto Comic-Con, Astin quipped that he was "offended" that Obama couldn't work a "LOTR" reference into his answer.
"[Obama] was talking about manipulating the minds of Congress, so there must be something in the trilogy ... I believe there must be something in the 'Lord of the Rings' canon that can work here. Sauron ... Saruman ... Mordor ... somewhere in the esoteric details, there must be a wizard, something or someone who can control minds."
Astin then went on to ask if Moviefone could get responses from "LOTR" fans.
So what say you, Ringers? Any brilliant ideas? Let us know in the comments below!
