Arnold Schwarzenegger is back on the big screen in his first lead role in a decade, this time playing a former big-city cop who settles in for the quiet life of a small-town sheriff. But don't worry, this isn't some laid-back rural drama. If film history has taught us anything, being a small-town sheriff is actually anything but quiet. Outlaws and aliens and monsters and wild biker gangs and killer cars and all kinds of other problems are naturally drawn to little communities.
In the new Arnie film, “The Last Stand,” that trouble comes in the form of a drug lord who is racing towards the Mexican border to escape the Feds. To cross, though, he and his minions have to pass through Sommerton Junction, and to pass through Sommerton Junction they'll have to go through Sheriff Ray Owens (Schwarzenegger).
As we celebrate Ah-nuld's return, we'd like to present these other small-town sheriffs with big problems, who paved the way for his latest role.
