While fans were mourning the loss of their titular hero in "The Bourne Identity" series, director Tony Gilroy made a promise: "No one's replacing Matt Damon. There will be a whole new hero, a whole new chapter...Jason Bourne will not be in this film, but he's very much alive."
Now, months later, Gilroy has made good on that sentiment. The first trailer for "The Bourne Legacy," which features Jeremy Renner filling in for Damon, has arrived.
In "Legacy," Renner plays Aaron Cross, a genetically altered super-killer. "Jason Bourne was the tip of the iceberg," says Edward Norton as a potential bad guy in Universal's full-length trailer. Here, we see Renner run, jump, and (duh) kill like a pro, all while putting the moves on a beautiful scientist, played by Rachel Weisz.
So rest easy, "Bourne" purists: the essence of Jason Bourne is alive and well! (Lookout for a brief Matt Damon cameo... in the form of a mugshot-like photo on a local news show.)
"The Bourne Legacy," which stars Oscar Isaac, Joan Allen, David Strathairn, Scott Glenn and Albert Finney, hits theaters on August 3.
