It should be a great weekend for movies, Old Sport. (Yes, that was a "Gatsby" pun).
Baz Luhrmann's lavish re-imagining of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel swings into theaters this Friday. The director put a unique spin on the well-known tale by setting the film to music by Jay-Z, Beyonce, and Florence Welch, and by shooting it in 3D, which is totally unnecessary, but also totally Luhrmann.
In case you didn't read the book in high school or college (what?!), "The Great Gatsby" tells the story of a mysterious and wealthy man named Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), who lives in 1920s Long Island, where the excess and opulence of the Jazz Age thrived. Gatsby is known for his extravagant parties, fancy cars, and for the shady circumstances by which he acquired his vast amounts of bling, as well as for his love of, and doomed affair with, a married woman named Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan). Tobey Maguire also stars as Nick Carroway, Gatsby's neighbor and the story's narrator. Isla Fisher and Tom Edgerton also star.
If you aren't ready for the visual spectacle that a Luhrmann-helmed, 3D-ified "Gatsby" is sure to be, Tyler Perry-produced comedy "Peeples" also hits theaters this weekend. Grace Peeples (Kerry Washington) and Wade Walker (Craig Robinson) are a newly engaged couple who don't exactly have the bride's father Virgil's (David Alan Grier) approval. Wade is a great boyfriend and all-around good person, but he is struggling professionally -- which is a problem for Virgil. Potentially hilarious hi-jinx occur when Wade spends the weekend with the entire Peeples clan at their home in the Hamptons.
The Venus and Serena Williams documentary, "Venus and Serena," also opens in limited release this weekend.
