The iconic music of “Star Wars” will play on. Legendary composer John Williams is on board to return to a galaxy far, far away and score “Episode VII,” according to director J.J. Abrams.
“It's very early days to know, but I believe that going forward, John Williams will be doing that film,” he said at a Berlin press conference for “Star Trek: Into the Darkness.”
“He was there long before I was,” Abrams noted.
Still, fans had speculated that Abrams might turn to composer and longtime collaborator Michael Giacchino, whom he's worked with on “Lost,” “Star Trek,” “Super 8,” and “Mission: Impossible.”
But it's hard to imagine any “Star Wars” movie without Williams's award-winning music. His “Star Wars” score -- featuring the soaring “Luke's Theme” and pounding Darth Vader theme “Imperial March” -- won him an Academy Award and still remains the highest-grossing non-popular music recording of all time.
In February, Williams expressed astonishment that “Star Wars” has endured for so long.
“Neither I, nor George [Lucas], nor anyone else involved thought this would go far or in a few years there would be a sequel and I'd have to revisit the themes … and years later another trilogy,” he said at a concert. “Now we're hearing of a new set of movies coming in 2015, 2016 … so I need to make sure I'm still ready to go in a few years for what I hope would be continued work with George.”
