One of the upcoming Marvel properties with the biggest number of question marks swirling around it is "Guardians of the Galaxy." Adapted from a relatively obscure comic book, the film will be co-written and directed by James Gunn, a cult favorite for his oddball features "Slither" and "Super." But at a premiere for "Iron Man 3" in London last night, Hey U Guys got to talk to Gunn about what he has in store for the project, which will be released in August of next year (he starts shooting this June).
On casting, Gunn all but confirmed that "Walking Dead" co-star Michael Rooker has been cast as Yondu, an alien warrior that sports a very memorable hairstyle. "He's got a new, little Mohawk that looks ridiculous on him, but yeah, he's here and hopefully we'll get something going." Also rumored but not confirmed is Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, a human resurrected as a cosmic fighting machine. Gunn again acted cagey on the confirmation: "We haven't really come out with our cast -- people have gotten hold of some things -- but I will say one thing: Dave Bautista is one of the most naturally gifted actors I have ever seen in my life… nobody else was ever offered that role, at all." When asked whether or not Zoe Saldana will appear as Gamora, a green-skinned assassin, Gunn laughed and said: "Maybe." (So far the only 100 percent confirmed cast member is Chris Pratt as team leader Peter Quill aka Star-Lord.)
When asked about the comparisons to another Disney-owned franchise set deep in outer space, he said "I do think we're very, very different from 'Star Wars'. Some of the concept art that came out is under my tutelage, and some of it is before my tutelage."
In terms of the movie being connected to the larger Marvel universe, he said, "We're very much like 'The Avengers,' where it's a very big, huge movie. It's different because it's cosmic, it's in outer space, it's very colorful. Later, he teased that, "All [the Marvel] movies are connected, we're created in a way that we're very connected to the movies that came before us. We're even more connected to 'The Avengers 2,' that comes after us, and so in that respect, what we would hope is that these characters would continue, and that at some point in time, they'll all meet up with different characters throughout the galaxy."
