Robert Downey Jr. is never boring.
When he's not donning lederhosen for the "Iron Man 3" photo call in Germany or generally being an adorable imp, he's giving good quote to publications like GQ, where he's appearing on the May cover.
RDJ makes no bones about the weirdness of Hollywood, especially when you're the most famous and/or talented person on the set. (Which, let's face it, he usually is!) Nope, he enjoys blowing other actors' minds with how normal he is. He told GQ, "Nothing pleases me more than when somebody who was awe-inspired to be working with me realizes I'm just another schmuck that they're bored of hanging out with on a set. I love that moment. I like it when that persistent illusion is smashed."
Of course, Downey is the best actor of his generation; it's just that that's all relative to him. "It's not like this is the greatest swath or generation of actors that has ever come down the pike." Convincing Marvel to hire him as Iron Man has also made him one of the smartest and the richest. According to GQ, "Whatever contract Downey signed when he agreed to appear in multiple movies as 'Iron Man' allowed him a share of 'The Avengers' payday far bigger than anyone could have anticipated. The Hollywood Reporter recently suggested that the true figure was around $50 million."
In any case, the actor with one of the most amazing career arcs of recent history has no qualms about getting ready to retire his suit of iron. He's got plans in the pipeline, like the dramedy "The Judge" with Robert Duval, a horror story where he'd play "a Village Voice reporter on the run," and a sort of Pinocchio story. He describes it as being "about this working-class weirdo who invests this inanimate object with all of the qualities he doesn't have. I'm just crazy about the idea.... To me a wooden boy is a real boy who doesn't feel like he's acknowledged."
For all his accolades and acknowledgements, Robert Downey Jr. has yet to snag an Oscar. He's pretty cool with the idea, though, because he knows it's gonna happen sooner or later. "I, personally, would be shocked if we went to the end of the tape now and I didn't have at least one… Look, even if I don't get one directly, eventually they're just going to have to give me one when I get old. So no matter how you slice it, I'm getting one."
In the meantime, we'll have to make do with "Iron Man 3," which will be hitting theaters May 3.
