Newly-minted Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway is close to scoring an out-of-this-world role for her next film: the lead in Christopher Nolan's top secret space-set story “Interstellar.” Though details about the film are scant, it is set to follow a story first developed in 2006 by Steven Spielberg, who became interested in the work of Caltech physicist and relativity expert Kip S. Thorne that theorized time travel was capable through worm holes. Spielberg tapped Nolan's brother Jonah to write the script, and after Spielberg abandoned the project, Nolan was brought on board to direct. Now, Hathaway is set to join the movie in an unspecified role. Matthew McConaughey just joined the project last month. Nolan hasn't said much about the project, but recently told Entertainment Weekly that there are certain films that influence any sci-fi director. “I think anytime you look at science fiction in movies, there are key touchstones,” he said. “‘Metropolis.' ‘Blade Runner.' ‘2001[: A Space Odyssey].' Whenever you're talking about getting off the planet, ‘2001' is somewhat unavoidable. But there is only one ‘2001.' So you don't want to get too near to that.” Whatever Nolan's got in store, if the casting is any indication, it's sure to be exciting. Hathaway was heartbreaking in “Les Miserables,” and her relationship with Nolan -- she worked with him on last summer's “The Dark Knight Rises” -- will work to her advantage on the set. Meanwhile, McConaughey is in the midst of a career resurgence, thanks to vast and varied roles in films like “Bernie” and “Magic Mike,” for which he won an Independent Spirit Award. Fingers crossed he finds a way to take his shirt off in “Interstellar.” [via Deadline]
