Luke Evans, who will soon be seen as the villain in "Fast and Furious 6," has just signed on to play an even more evil character for Universal by landing the title role in their new "Dracula" movie (formerly "Dracula: Year Zero"). The film follows the origin story of the vampire king, one that the Hollywood Reporter describes as being about "a young prince who, when the lives of his wife and child are put in danger by a bloodthirsty sultan, risks his soul to save them, and in the process becomes the first vampire."
At one point, the movie was going to be helmed by "I, Robot" director Alex Proyas, with Sam Worthington attached to star. When Proyas left due to the now-shuttered motion capture version of "Paradise Lost," Universal shrunk the size of "Dracula: Year Zero," installing commercial director Gary Shore as the director and having a new version of the script written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.
Evans, for his part, has been a consistently entertaining actor over the past few years, playing everything from gods (in both "Clash of the Titans" and "Immortals") to musketeers (he was Aramis in Paul W.S. Anderson's 3D "Three Musketeers") to a bad guy criminal who races cars in "Fast 6" (he has a role in the two latter "Hobbit" movies, too).
It's also interesting to note the title change of this film -- going from the prequel-esque "Dracula: Year Zero" to plain old "Dracula" makes it seem like Universal, at least on paper, is investing more in the project as a potential remake of the classic 1931 flick.
