“Jane Got a Gun” is getting a new leading man this week, as Bradley Cooper is set to join the troubled indie that already lost two stars and a director.
Cooper would play the role recently vacated by Jude Law, who was to star opposite Natalie Portman as the leader of a gang who shot Portman's estranged husband and is now on its way to finish the job at her farm. Joel Edgerton plays Portman's former lover who helps her prepare for the attack.
Law left the movie the day after it was supposed to start shooting –- because he wanted to work with the film's director, Lynne Ramsay, who dropped out of the project on the first day of production. Ramsay, most known for helming “We Need to Talk About Kevin,” was quickly replaced by Gavin O'Connor (“Warrior") and “Jane” is currently two weeks into shooting.
Ramsay's and Law's untimely exits weren't the first signs of trouble on the film. Law was cast after Michael Fassbender –- who was supposed to play Edgerton's role –- dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. Edgerton then took on the role and Law was cast.
With all the behind-the-scenes drama (hopefully) behind them, Cooper's addition to the cast should boost morale and bring some much-needed good publicity to the production. And who knows, now that he's working opposite Oscar-winner Portman, maybe Cooper, nominated for an Academy Award for “Silver Linings Playbook,” can finally clinch some gold himself.
