'The Academy Awards' Rebranded as 'The Oscars'

This year, the Academy Awards is getting a facelift -- sort of. The annual awards show is eschewing its illustrious history -- 85 years young! -- for an edgier, more youthful name. "We're rebranding it," Oscars co-producer Neil Meron told TheWrap. "We're not calling it 'the 85th annual Academy Awards,' which keeps it mired somewhat in a musty way. It's called 'The Oscars.'" This isn't the first time the show has tried to tap into the youth market (looking at you, James Franco and Anne Hathaway). However, rest easy, Academy Award puritans: despite the title adjustment, it's not necessarily permanent. Spokesperson Teni Melidonian explained that, "It is right for this show, but we could easily go back to using 'Academy Awards' next year." So what do you think of this change? For a show that loves flaunting its longevity and history, is the rebranding an odd move, or does it even matter? Let us know in the comments. [via TheWrap b/w Yahoo! Movies]
