After spending a career perfecting his own art-reflects-life, Judd Apatow is ready for something really, really new: Broadway. Ahead of the release of "Knocked Up's" sort of sequel, "This is 40," which stars (his entire family and Paul Rudd) the comedic auteur sat down with GQ to discuss his plans of developing a dramatic Broadway play. “I miss doing something where I'm interacting more with the audience," the director said of his interest in getting involved with the production. "I like the idea of writing something and rewriting it every night based on how it's playing. I have a great idea. Maybe like the best idea I've ever had. It requires me to create characters and situations that have absolutely nothing to do with my experience.” After a slew of comedies telling the coming of age tale of couch potato schlubs, Apatow's newest endeavor is certainly fresh. The premise of his upcoming play centers around the victims of the criminal-justice system. "I am excited to write something which has a social conscience. That is not something I have attempted before, and I hope I am up for the challenge,” he said. To read the entire Apatow profile, click over to GQ. "This is 40" hits theaters Friday. [via GQ]
